How to get cited in AI search: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Copilot

October 28, 2026•5 min read

More people now get answers before they ever click a link. Google shows AI Overviews at the top of many searches and offers a full AI Mode. ChatGPT searches the web and cites its sources. Microsoft's Copilot does the same with Bing. When someone asks "who's a good HVAC company in Frederick" or "how much does a website redesign cost," the businesses named or linked in that answer get the attention.

There's a lot of noise about how to get there, including new acronyms, special files and tools that promise to "rank you in ChatGPT." Here's what the platforms themselves say, and what we've found actually matters.

What Google says about AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's guidance is direct. To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed. You don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup.

In other words, good SEO is the price of entry. Google's own best practices for AI features are the familiar ones:

  • Let Google crawl your site, including through your hosting or CDN settings.

  • Make important pages easy to find through internal links.

  • Give visitors a good page experience.

  • Keep important content in text, not only in images or video.

  • Support your text with relevant images and video.

  • Make sure structured data matches what's visible on the page.

  • Keep your Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in your Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type, so you don't need a separate tool to see them.

ChatGPT and Copilot work differently

Outside Google, the first question is whether those systems can see you at all.

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI says sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check that your robots.txt file, firewall and CDN don't block it by accident. That crawler is separate from GPTBot, which OpenAI uses for model training, so you can allow one and block the other.

  • Copilot: Copilot draws on Bing. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Bing has added an AI Performance report there that shows how often your pages are cited in AI answers.

What earns a citation

AI answers are built from pages that answer the question clearly and can be trusted. That favors a few kinds of content:

Answer first, then explain

Put the direct answer near the top of the page in plain language, then give detail. A roofer's page that says "most full replacements take one to two days" near the top is easy to quote. Three paragraphs of introduction before the point is not. Use descriptive headings that match how people actually ask.

Specifics only you can provide

Generic advice is everywhere, so AI systems have no reason to cite yours. Your pricing ranges, your process, what you've learned from real jobs, local rules you deal with, and original data you've gathered are what make a page worth citing.

Clear facts about your business

Make it easy to understand who you are: what you do, where you're located, which areas you serve and who's behind the business. Keep that information identical across your website, Google Business Profile and other listings, and use structured data that matches what's on the page.

A reputation beyond your own site

AI answers lean on what others say about you, not just what you say about yourself. Reviews, local news coverage, industry directories, partner sites and community involvement all add up.

What to skip

  • Special AI files and markup sold as a must: Google says you don't need them to appear in its AI features.

  • Mass-produced pages: publishing hundreds of near-identical AI-written pages to catch every possible question is what Google's spam policies call scaled content abuse. It can hurt the whole site.

  • Chasing one prompt: AI answers vary by wording, location and user. Build broad authority on the topics you want to own instead of tuning for a single phrase.

How to measure it

  • Google Search Console: AI Overview and AI Mode traffic is included in the Web performance data.

  • Bing Webmaster Tools: the AI Performance report shows citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers.

  • Analytics: watch referral traffic from AI assistants such as chatgpt.com.

  • Ask your leads: add "How did you hear about us?" to your forms and include an AI assistant option.

  • Spot-check: once a month, ask the main AI assistants the questions your customers ask and note who gets cited.

The short version

  • For Google's AI features, strong SEO is the requirement. There's no secret extra step.

  • Make sure ChatGPT's and Bing's crawlers can reach your site.

  • Lead with clear answers and add specifics only you can give.

  • Keep your business information consistent everywhere.

  • Build a reputation that shows up on other sites.

  • Avoid mass-produced pages and miracle tools.
